Start with the received group
An item describes what the inventory is. A lot identifies one received group of that item. Recording the receipt separately preserves differences in lot code, quantity, location, status, and expiration date.
Keep current state and history together
A current location and balance answer what is true now. Receiving, movement, consumption, shipment, status, and correction records provide the sequence behind that current state.
Use operational statuses carefully
A recalled or quarantined status can flag a lot for internal attention. The software does not determine product safety, execute a recall, or decide what action a regulation requires.
