Food lot inventory tracking is most useful when the operational record changes with the physical inventory. Each lot remains connected to its item, quantity, location, optional expiration date, status, and recorded activity.

Capture the lot while receiving

Use the physical label to record the lot code, item, quantity, unit, location, and expiration date when one applies. Treat separate received groups as separate lots.

Keep the balance and location current

Record movement, consumption, and shipment as they happen. Later expiration or recall review is easier to interpret when the quantity and location have been maintained.

Review dates and blocked statuses

Expiration attention highlights time-sensitive lots. Quarantine and recall statuses distinguish lots that should not be treated as ordinary active inventory.

Do not confuse the record with a guarantee

The workspace can support an internal operational review. It does not determine food safety, send recall notices, automate disposition, or guarantee FDA, FSMA, or HACCP compliance.
